The Meridian Building, Kumutoto Building 7 in Wellington, is New Zealand’s first major project to be completed under the guidelines of the Green Star Building Rating System. This building is the first building in New Zealand with fully integrated lighting and lighting controls, supplied extensively by Enlightenz. Currently under construction, Site 7 is a simple, energy-efficient four storey ‘L’ shaped building made up of two parts. The ground floor will be constructed entirely of glass, allowing views both through and into the state-of-the-art building.

Under the guidelines of the Australian Green Star System, the Meridian building is set for a rating of 5 stars, indicating ‘Excellence’. The planners of the building have set clear targets for sustainability and are working through them in reverse to ensure that the goals are met. Sustainability considerations need to be addressed at all stages of the lifecycle of a building if it is to be designated a ‘green building’.

Almost exclusively, DALI lighting is being used within the building, providing exceptional lighting control and flexibility and offering lamp/ballast condition monitoring capability. The DALI lighting is integrated with the building through the Building Management System (BMS) and localised routers. Multi sensors installed throughout the building manage light levels (constant light) and area occupancy. Occupancy detail is passed to the BMS where it is also used for air-conditioning control. With the full two- way communication the lighting can also be controlled via the BMS for functions such as after hours control, all on/all off, and other future requirements as needed.

The DALI lighting will be commissioned by Enlightenz with remote access capability, provided to allow firmware upgrades and offsite support.
